Lawry's opened on June 15, 1938, at the "Restaurant Row" on 100N.La Cienega Blvd. in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles. Its instant success and enduring popularity help to create the very idea of fine dining in modern America.

Co-founder, Lawrence L. Frank, designed the silver carts.In heavy stainless steel, the US$6,400 cost of building the first two carts represented 20% of the restaurant’s initial capital investment. The price of each cart was the same as a new Cadillac at the time. These first two carts are actually still in service today.

Chicago was the second city Lawry's entered.It occupied the previous 1890’s McCormick Mansion that later became the renowned Kungsholm Puppet Theatre before Lawry’s.

Lawry's Dallas was the third to open.In a state where beef was serious business, Lawry’s had earned a great reputation and lived up to its standard here.

Lawry's Beverly Hills had moved a few blocks further south in 1974 due to expansion.

But it had returned to the original site of 100 N. La Cienega Blvd. in 1993. The underground parking, which holds 170 cars, cost more to construct than the building itself.

Lawry’s was the first to enter this “Restaurant Row” decades ago, and it is the only one among the starting group of restaurants, which is still in business today.

Lawry’s is still a family business, with the second and third generations of Franks and Van de Kamps working side by side in the restaurants’ operation.

Lawry's was at its 27th year anniversary at Beverly Hills.They hosted the one-day “Price Rollback” event, which put the Lawry’s Cut back to US$1.25 (the price in 1938) for the first 1,000 patrons. All proceeds were donated to AbilityFirst. To recognize this thoughtful contribution, Beverly Hills’ Mayor John Mirisch and L.A. Councilman Tom LaBonge, declared June 11 “Lawry’s Day” in appreciation of “75 years of superb food, outstanding service and warm hospitality.
